TATTOO AFTERCARE: A STEP-BY-STEP GUIDELINE

Tattoo by Archie Sotchesa

Getting a new tattoo is a scary and exciting experience, especially if it’s your first time to get one. But before you walk out of that door to show the whole world the newest addition to your body art collection, make sure that you know the standard procedure in tattoo aftercare. Remember, it’s your responsibility to take care of your tattoo and the artist will count on you for that.

Here is a detailed guideline of how to care for your new tattoo:

The bandage should only be worn for 1 to 2 hours. Before removing it, always remember to wash your hands and dry them with a clean paper towel. This also applies after washing the tattoo. In a situation where the bandage gets stuck to your tattoo, gently wash it off with running water, but NEVER soak it under any circumstance. Doing that can cause infection. So showers are fine – just no soaking.

We recommend that you wash your tattoo with an organic, unscented antibacterial soap (we recommend Dove, Dial or Human Nature) by gently rubbing off all the excess blood, ink and plasma from your tattoo. It’s important that you only use your hand when doing so and not a washcloth or loofah as they can harbor bacteria and may cause infection.

After washing the tattoo, pat it dry with a paper towel. DO NOT use a hand or bath towel as they can harbor bacteria and cause problems. Also DO NOT cover the tattoo with a bandage after it’s been washed. It needs to breathe and get air to heal properly.

Only wash the tattoo twice a day for the duration of the healing time. If you overdo it, it can wash away your body’s natural bacteria which helps your skin heal. Just wash the tattoo in the morning and at night before you go to bed.

Some artists recommend using an antibacterial ointment while others don’t. The use of ointments may heal the tattoo faster, but it can contribute to antibiotic resistance. For some, ointments can suffocate the tattoo by not letting enough on/in the wound which can cause excessive scabbing. Using nothing but soap and water also works fine. You just have to make sure to keep it clean at all times.
Before going to bed, wash your tattoo and pat it dry with a paper towel. Make sure to change the cover of your bed to something clean to avoid infection.

On the third or fourth day, your tattoo will start to dry out and flake. Do NOT scratch, pick or peel them. This is a completely normal process that will continue for about a week. Just allow it fall off naturally and, by all means, DO NOT scratch it. Scratching can ultimately spoil the look of your tattoo by the time it completely heals. You may then start using 1or 2 drops of lotion to help bring relief. We recommend Aveeno.

The last stage of healing is when all the scabs have fallen off from your tattoo and a thin dry layer of dead skin is left over it. You may notice that the ink on your tattoo no longer looks as vibrant as it did when it was still fresh and this is completely natural.

Overall, the healing stages of tattoos stretch out over a three to four week period, and taking special care of your tattoo during this time is essential to preserve the awesome work your artist has created. Remember, it’s your responsibility to take care of that creation. The outcome of your tattoo depends on how you treat it.
